The first signs of migraine headaches in a person are usually noticed after puberty. They can also appear as early as young adulthood. They will usually last until around 50, then disappear. This is not always true. Migraines can start in children as young as seven years old. They can also occur in older people. Migraines are fairly common in children before puberty.

Hormonal Changes

The ratio starts to shift dramatically after puberty. Migraine headaches are three times more common in adults than in men. This could be explained by female hormones. Experts believe that the cause is a change in the female’s menstrual cycle. It is difficult to determine the cause of migraines in female hormones.

There is no known cause and many factors can trigger migraine headaches. Migraine headaches in women may be related to fluctuations in estrogen levels during menstruation. These headaches are known as menstrual migraines. The estrogen levels drop immediately before the menstrual cycle. Migraine symptoms are common during this time of decreased estrogen levels.
