The Kubotan is the registered trademark of its founder, Takayuki Kubota. It was initially intended as a way for police officers to subdue their suspects non-lethally, and with no permanent injury. He brought the weapon to the attention of the Los Angeles authorities when he coached the department’s female officers in its use and application.


It’s been known as “The Persuader” and is touted as a tool of attitude adjustments. The primary chain Kubotan is roughly the size of a mark, about five and a half inches long and a bit over a half-inch in diameter. It is not too heavy to carry, indeed its dimensions and the six grooves which line its shaft are excellent for gripping. It’s made of hard, high impact plastic.

Attached to one end is a screw eye with a split ring on which to maintain a pair of keys. The dimensions of the Kubotan, along with the fact that it is on a key chain, is fantastic for disguising its true function. To the untrained eye, this self-defense tool resembles a key holder; its camouflage makes it a weapon of shock in addition to intent.

The weapon is designed to be employed by striking bone, soft flesh or neurological points, like knuckles, the bridge of the nose, the shins, etc.. It may also be used clenched on your fist in order to add weight to any punch, or using the keys attached, the Kubotan it may be utilized to flaile your keys in an attacker.

The main point to remember is that this weapon isn’t one which requires great strength to use. It’s more a matter of knowing which parts of the body to attack with it to bring an assailant to his knees. And the Kubotan is more than capable of doing this. Using it to hit on the pressure points on the body actually weakens the attacker from the shocking quantity of pain. If you can, try to hit as many of these spots as you can debilitate the assailant and stop him from following you.
