How To Avoid Burnout?

A few months ago, I literally fell apart. Along with a full-time occupation, a Masters’ dissertation to write, two consulting jobs and a board position within an international youth organisation, which involved regular traveling, I’d also had a house to handle and a husband to enjoy.

However, I was failing at almost everything. Although my health was fine, I felt worn out all of the time, and was feeling discouraged and disinterested. For me, this was rather strange since I’m typically a high- energy individual with numerous interests so I was not quite sure what I was experiencing. As I researched; I came across a startling reality that working girls like me are experiencing the exact same thing. So, today, I’m devoting this piece to understanding and combatting the condition best known as: “burnout”.

Were you aware that a growing number of working girls who appear to”have it all” are burning out at work till they reach age forty? The American Psychological Association’s David Ballard, explains job burnout as”an elongated period of time where somebody experiences fatigue and a lack of interest in matters, leading to a decline in their job performance.”


It often happens when we are worn out or exhausted, particularly as a consequence of long-term stress. According to research conducted by the Captivate Network, working guys are twenty-five percent more likely to take breaks during the day for personal activities; seven percent more likely to have a walk, five percent more likely to go out to lunch, and thirty-five percent more likely to take breaks”just to unwind”. Women, on the other hand, frequently exude comfort to be able to care for the needs of others (Bosses, spouses, kids, relatives etc.)

The result is that many working women are experiencing the harmful signs of burnout, which may manifest itself as loss of focus, lowered productivity or extreme irritability.

  • Emotional fatigue: Feelings of being not able to provide any more to your business or relationships.
  • Depersonalization: Developing a negative, cynical, and at times callous attitude towards your job, customers, family or significant others.
  • Diminished Personal Accomplishment: Feelings of ineffectiveness or unmotivated to complete business tasks or other duties. Besides feelings of excessive anxiety, burnout can ruin private relationships and lead to fatigue, insomnia, depression and anxiety.


So, how do working girls fight the effects of burnout and fatigue? Renowned gym trainer Gayle Arnold advises: “Among the best ways to fight burnout is to have a weekend break or a mini-vacation often. Make it imperative. “Ultimately, burnout can be avoided when you take care to make a lifestyle which gives you the time to look after yourself. Don’t be afraid to take your leave/vacation days Based on a recent study, forty-eight percent of employees felt happier and more positive in their offices after taking a holiday. Since feeling doubtful about your workplace is among the essential causes of burnout, taking a vacation is a simple way to keep yourself interested and engaged in the office.
