    Does Mother’s Intuition Exist?

Mother’s Intuition – Fact or Folklore? Like most moms, I feel a deep connection to my son. A few years back, I experienced “mother’s intuition” in its best, in a strange and amazing way. My son, Sam, was attending college in Boston and he called to say he was not feeling well. What started out as a terrible cold had progressed to what looked like a nasty flu.

    What happened?

He went to a walk in clinic, was prescribed antibiotics and a cough suppressant, and has been advised to take the medicine and return in 2 days. I talked to him on the telephone after he’d returned from the practice. He was going to take his first dose of medicine and go to bed. Because he was under a physician’s care and on drugs, I trusted he would soon return to his old, wholesome self.

A couple of hours afterwards, I felt a strange desire to meditate and send some “healing energy” to my son. This was really foreign to me. I had never done anything like it before, and did not know where the impulse came out. While I was dabbling with meditation, I had never tried to use it to send electricity to anybody.

It seemed rather silly. But there the compulsion was, sitting in my mind (at least I believed it was within my head-I discovered later that it came from my heart). Strange as it seemed, I chose to listen to the natural tendency.

    Good to know

I started to meditate and I visualized Sam standing , facing me. In my head, I place my hands on his head and began to massage his scalp. I was hoping these efforts would help him to sleep very well so he would wake up feeling better in the morning. In the visualization, he leaned into me and put his head on my shoulder.

I kept massaging his head and his back, returning him into an upright position as it was easier to massage him like that. But Sam kept leaning into me and placing his head on my shoulder. This happened a number of times from the meditation, so I finally gave up and continued to massage his head and back from this place.

After about 20 minutes of imagining that I grew tired and fell asleep, hoping that he’d have a restful and restorative sleep. Meanwhile, a couple of hours after speaking to me on the phone, Sam took his initial round of antibiotics.

    What now?

Shortly after, his world started to flash and tilt and he began to vomit blood. His room-mate called 911 and he was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. Sam was undergoing a serious allergic reaction to the antibiotic he’d taken. Completely unaware of his catastrophe, I was engaged in my impromptu meditation, sending Sam”healing energy” due to the odd compulsion I felt.

When Sam came home for Christmas two weeks following his visit to the hospital, he and I were talking about what occurred. I recalled the visualization and I had been curious about the timing of events. I didn’t mention the visualization before he had explained the timeline of his ordeal. I was dumbfounded when he explained that he was in the ambulance heading into the hospital somewhere between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

This was the specific time I felt the need to visualize the healing massage. It was the specific time he kept leaning into me and placing his head on my shoulder as I tried to massage him! There’s a difference between believing and knowing. When we thinkwe use our mind and this takes a very low level of awareness. When we understand something, we use our intuition and this requires a much greater level of awareness.

    The Mind

We think with our mind but we understand with our heart. Our heart is in constant communication with us. It always communicates. It never stops. But the messages from our heart come to us in intangible ways. We can not see or touch the messages, we can only perceive or feel them as they come to us out of our reasoning procedure. The advice we perceive with our soul comes to us via an intuitive procedure.

We seem to just know things without knowing how we know. When we learn to tap into this understanding, our heart guides us in strange and amazing ways, just as it did when my son was in crisis. While my brain was not conscious of his catastrophe, my heart somehow understood. The paramedics and physicians helped him , and I assisted him energetically without even realizing what was happening.

Not everything can be shown. Some things just need to be experienced. All of us have access to profound instinct, especially us mothers. So as to tap into your mother’s instinct, all you will need to do is accept, trust, and act upon the profound urges you are feeling in your heart when you experience them. Debbie L.
