As single moms (and mothers in general), we’ve got a propensity to care for the needs of our families and fail to exercise self-care. We’re so busy doing everything for other people that we sometimes lose touch with who we are, our desires, dreams, and goals take a back seat for so long we forget about them.
We stop pursing the things which bring us pleasure and fulfillment. This can put stress on your relationships with your loved ones and friends. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with caring for others and doing things for others. These are things we will need to do. However, it becomes an issue once we don’t take the time to look after ourselves. You’re equally as important as those you care for and do things for.
When is the last time you did something for yourself only for the pure pleasure and fulfillment it provides you? When is the last time you read a fantastic book? When is the last time you went out to dinner with a number of your closest friends? When is the last time you went and got your hair done at the hair salon or got a manicure and pedicure? When is the last time you took a bubble bath while listening to your favourite music?
When is the last time you danced just for the pure pleasure of it, whether you can dance or not? When you honestly answer these questions, you will most likely see how much you’ve been neglecting your own needs and just how out of balance your life actually has been. Take time now and reconnect to the things that bring you joy, happiness, and satisfaction. Many of the most easy and enjoyable things you can do will not demand money or very little money that you do.
Take a look at the balance wheel and begin to reconnect with the things that include real meaning to your life. The bottom line is this: when we, as mothers, especially single moms, exercise , we really become better mothers as we’re delighted with ourselves, and the added bonus is that we are simulating an important life lesson to our children. We’re teaching them to never give up on their dreams and goals, care for others, and learn how to nurture themselves as well. We’re teaching them to have a healthy balance in their lives by modeling it for them.
